4K/Ultra HD connection of sources and displays

Consumers, resellers and installers are encountering compatibility and connectivity issues between various 4K /Ultra HD devices. At Nuetec we have identified challenges and solutions this document is highlighting them and will be useful to all.

In theory, High Speed (Category 2) HDMI cables of short lengths are capable of offering increased bandwidth required for 4K content to be sent from Source to Display. This increased (up to 18Gbps) speed is possible because HDMI 2.0 output and input ports apply signal conditioning (i.e. Pre-emphasis/De-emphasis & Equalisation) to the outgoing and incoming data streams. There are variations in how this is implemented and may cause connectivity issues.

To ensure reliability and performance of 4K/Ultra HD installation, it is important that all the cables/links in conjunction with the chosen AV equipment result in sufficient Headroom over and above the HDMI minimums.

  1. Use Compliant/Certified Premium HDMI cables (18 Gigabit Speed).

  2. Choose well engineered ‘tried and tested’ AV equipment. Familiarize yourself with the equipment setup procedures and capabilities.

  3. Ensure that all the firmware is up to date. See Footnote 1.

  4. Keep the number of devices in the signal path to a minimum.

  5. Observe ‘Best Practices’ for cable installation e.g. minimum bend radius, proximity to RF noise & etc.

Footnote 1

Caution! Firmware updates can sometimes cause compatibilities issues with the system. If the system is working properly and is ‘bug free’, it may be worth whilst ‘Disabling’ the updates option. Auto updates can cause problems at a later date.
