Critical Bandwidth

The Critical importance of high bandwidth

4K standards have been adopted and announced by two consortiums of manufacturers in north America and Europe

In Europe the 4K Ultra UHD is supported by a alliance of manufacturers http://www.digitaleurope.org/Services/High-Definition-Logos/UHD

In the US the UHD Alliance has announced its own set of requirements and standards http://www.uhdalliance.org/

Additionally there are Sony 4K, Sony HDR 4K, UtlraUHD, Ultra HD Premium

In all instances the requirements are similar if not identical 4K Displays and technology

To fully benefit from screens that are able to generate luminance of 1000nits, a transmission chain of 10bit colour depth is required. The 8bit transmission available from most of our competitors can not generate an image composed from REC 2020 colour gamut, images sent via 8bit transmission are only able to form the inferior REC. 709 colour gamuts at 60Hz. The effect on movie and gaming image created when HDR, 10bit and REC.2020 WCG is transforming homes with 10bit display in to a near professional quality displays.

The introduction of 4K Ultra HD  has created a vast challenge to installers and integrators as it stipulates a requirements for a higher than 10.2Gbps.

To fully benefit from the rich wide colour gamut offered by the REC2020 standard content must be transmitted at 10bit colour depth.

Current transmission methods such as HDbaseT are offering a limit of 10.2Gbps capacities which fall short of the ability to display 10bits at 60Hz.

The lack of bandwidth has very significant implication to compatibility with the latest OLED, LED and projectors.

In many instances the use of HDbaseT or HDMI1.4 connections will result in lack of any image on the screen regardless of the refresh rate chosen.

In addition to the connectivity limitations the 8bit image will be significantly poorer than that of a 10bit image as it is using a far reduced (6,250% lesser than 10bits) pallet of pigments to create colours and contrasts on the screens.

The stunning colour density and brightness of REC. 2020 images cannot be generated via the inferior 8Bit transmission used by our competitors who are utilising HDbaseT technology which is capped at 10.2Gbps.

The following sections illustrate and highlights key facts that should be considered by installers, specialists and hi tech integrators.

Please note the fact that a minimum of 11.1Gbps is required to accurately display Ultra 4K HD, Ultra HD incorporating10bit colour depth. (Please review chart at bottom of page)
